Prot's signature sunglasses are actually a favorite pair owned and worn by U2's front man, Bono. The glasses are Brand DITA and style is discontinued. Kevin Spacey asked to borrow them for the film, which Bono agreed to under the condition that they were well cared for and were returned immediately upon completion of the film.
(at around 18 min) Kevin Spacey had to record the scene where Prot eats a whole banana (skin and all) 27 times.
The original plan was that Will Smith was to play Prot and Kevin Spacey Dr. Mark Powell. When Smith pulled out of the role, Spacey decided to play Prot.
In the novel, one of Prot's favorite movies is Starman (1984), which starred Jeff Bridges, who played the title role as the alien.
On Kevin Pollak's Chat Show: Bill Hader (2014), Bill Hader revealed that he had worked on K-PAX as a production assistant for one day, but was fired after accidentally letting two costumed actors from Planet of the Apes (2001) wander through a shot during filming.
"Prot: I wanna tell you something Mark, something you do not yet know, that we K-PAXians have been around long enough to have discovered. The universe will expand, then it will collapse back on itself, then will expand again. It will repeat this process forever. What you don't you know is that when the universe expands again, everything will be as it is now. Whatever mistakes you make this time around, you will live through on your next pass. Every mistake you make, you will live through again, & again, forever. So my advice to you is to get it right this time around. Because this time is all you have."
"Dr. Mark Powell: How do you know right from wrong? Prot: Every being in the universe knows right from wrong, Mark."
