In real-life, Anthony Quinn was a close personal friend of gangster Frank Costello after the mob boss retired and until Costello's death.
When Don Faranzano (Sir Michael Gambon) (his name was Maranzano in real-life) is introducing his underbosses at the banquet where he announces himself as the "Boss of all bosses", he names the underbosses as "Lucky" Luciano, Joe Bonnano, Joe Profaci, Vincent Mangano, and Thomas Gagliano. After Lucky orchestrated the death of Massari the five underbosses became the heads of the individual "Five Families" of organized crime in New York City. Eventually, through the years of succession, the Luciano family became the Genovese Family. The Mangano Family became the Gambino Family. The Gagliano family became the Luchese Family, and the Profaci Family became the Columbo Family. Only the Bonnano Family retained the name of its original leader.
Even though the others constantly call Benjamin Siegel "Bugsy", in real-life, Siegel never liked the nickname and would usually get upset and even violent if someone used the name in his presence.
Mara (Lara Flynn Boyle) was loosely based on the real-life Gay Orlova, a chorus girl and escort whom Charlie "Lucky" Luciano dated while in New York City.
Sir Michael Gambon's first American movie.
"Bugsy: [to "No-Nose Tony" and the other Faranzano mobsters who've been jumping Rothstein's bootleg-shipments] ... Try this again and I will kill your mothers, fuck your sisters, and turn your brothers into eunuchs! Lucky: I think you've made your point, Benny. Let's go. Meyer Lansky: [Then, after Bugsy guns down No-Nose] ... You wanna start a war? Bugsy: I don't mind. Meyer Lansky: Well, I do. Sometimes you're so stupid I can't stand it."
"Arnold Rothstein: Mr. Luciano, you're walking down the street. Suddenly you realize you're being followed. It's a hit. Walking towards you is a second gunman. You have time to fire at only one of them. Which one do... Lucky: [cutting him off] I don't accept the question. To live, I gotta kill 'em both."
