Ms. Marvel has given us our first Pakistani-American lead Kamala Khan. Apart from being a female protagonist in a superhero miniseries, Kamala Khan is also the first Muslim superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel first appeared in a comic book in 2013 and the character has now made its live-action debut.
The first season of Ms. Marvel shows how Kamala Khan gets her powers. However, if you are a comic book fanatic, you may have some reservations about the deviations that were taken in the series. The makers have intended to humanize the character as much as possible. So far, the plot is a generic origin story of a superhero that starts during her teen years.
Why watch Ms. Marvel?
The first episode of the series intends to introduce the character to the audience so they can connect with it. The episode starts with Kamala persuading her parents to allow her to go to an Avengers convention dressed as Captain Marvel, her superhero idol. Simultaneously, Kamala is also called upon in the principal’s office, where she is trying to defend herself against the charges of mindless doodling and daydreaming during the classes.
The pilot episode may be overshadowed by the fact that there is a female Muslim character that has come to life in a superhero venture. What’s exciting is the accurate depiction of passionate female fandom. An attribute that was absent before.
This is groundbreaking because the audience is used to seeing a male protagonist inheriting the powers of his predecessor. Much like any other sidekick, Ms. Marvel also has a tech genius who agrees to go to the convention with her. While donning the costume and adding the finishing touches, Kamala wears her heirloom bangle that changes the course of the plot.
Soon, Ms. Marvel finds out that she can shoot solid energy beams that can be used to build utility structures. The bangle traces its history to Kamala’s great grandmother, who suffered irreparable trauma during the partition. This arc is further explored in the second episode, which ends on a cliffhanger. The series also explores Kamala’s Islamic culture and heritage, where her family is shown to be strict. This leads to Kamala’s constant struggle to escape her boundaries and explore her society. Character-wise, Kamala’s parents are nothing more than ordinary. A certain comic element is added by Kamala’s mother, who has a knack for sarcastic remarks.
