IMDbThe classical song Pag Ghungroo Bandhe Meera Nache sung by Kishore Kumar had a part of classical lyrics (Sa Sa Sa Re Ga Re Ga Pani Ni Sa Sa Sa) this particular verse was sung by classical singer P Satyanarayan Mishra.
When the film was launched in 1978 Vinod Khanna was doing Shashi Kapoor's role. Vinod opted out due to problems with Prakash Mehra.
Raj Babbar was signed by Prakash Mehra during his struggle in Mumbai (1978). He lived at Prakash Mehra's house during his struggling days. Mehra signed Raj Babbar for Namak Halaal. The distributors offered Prakash a better price if he replaced Raj Babbar with Shatrughan Sinha. Prakash Mehra agreed but Amitabh Bachchan no longer wanted to work with Shatrughan. That is when Prakash Mehra sought out Shashi Kapoor. This was how Shashi Kapoor was signed. Raj Babbar was eventually dropped from the film. Raj Babbar always held Amitabh responsible for his exit from the film. Babbar felt it was Amitabh who was behind his exit from the film. Years later their rivalry would go further when they clashed over Rekha.
The "I can talk English scene" was mainly improvised, and it was shot with the director Prakash Mehra outside the room, a condition Amitabh Bachchan set as he would start laughing otherwise.
Shashi Kapoor's wife Jennifer Kendal designed Kapoor's clothes for the film. She was advised to provide clothes for a 25 year old Kapoor (he was 44 years old during filming).
