TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The stage production of "No Time for Sergeants" by Ira Levin opened at the Alvin Theater in New York on Thursday, October 20, 1955, and ran for seven hundred ninety-six performances. Andy Griffith received a 1956 Tony Award nomination for Distinguished Supporting or Featured Dramatic Actor.

The word 'Nigger' is used by Irvin Blanchard in the Broadway production to describe a Black officer (played by Ossie Davis in the original cast.) In the film version, the character is changed to a WAC Lieutenant.

This was Don Knotts' film debut. He met Andy Griffith when he played the same part in Broadway's "No Time For Sergeants". Griffith remembered Knotts when he was looking for someone to play bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show (1960). The two formed a lifelong friendship. After Knotts left Andy Griffith Show, he later made guest appearances on it and another Andy Griffith television series, Matlock (1986). In 2006, Griffith even broke the news of Knotts' passing to the media. ** UPDATE ** The original poster was wrong. Andy Griffith wasn't looking for someone to play his deputy, Don Knotts contacted Griffith and suggested that he needed someone to play his deputy.

Mac Hyman based his all-time best-selling novel on his experiences growing up in Cordele, Georgia, and as a navigator in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Sammy Jackson appears uncredited as an inductee in several scenes. Six years later he would star in the lead role as Will Stockdale in the short-lived television sitcom adaptation of the story.

Popular Dialogues

"Benjamin B. Whitledge: Our post was the tail of the plane and nobody told us to quit it! Will Stockdale: But the tail was on fire, Ben! Our post was a-quittin' us!"

"[reading from inductee questionnaire] Benjamin B. Whitledge: You ever had R.O.T.C.? Will Stockdale: No... , but Irvin did! Close to a year of it. He's so 'ornery I think he still might have a touch of it. Benjamin B. Whitledge: No, Will. R.O.T.C. ain't a disease, it's trainin'... Reserve, Officer's, Training... ,uh... Corporation!"
