IMDbThe show unveils an intriguing premise but falls short of properly taking advantage on the show's potential due to its ambitious fusion of noir, fantasy, and historical aspects. The series depicts the conflict between the forces of good and evil in the City of Angels against a setting of social and political tensions. It offers a wide range of people, including investigators, cult leaders, and supernatural beings, who must negotiate a chaotic world. The convoluted plot intertwines mysticism, religion, and cultural disputes, seeking to replicate the core ideas of the original "Penny Dreadful" series but in a different environment. The 1930s Los Angeles setting is visually spectacular, with costumes, set designs, and cinematography that pay close attention to detail. The show successfully recreates the era's ambiance, immersing viewers in a world of luxury, crime, and corruption. The cast, consisting of Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, and Nathan Lane, delivers consistently strong performances that offer dimension to their different roles.
