Rotten TomatoesRaees is a Hindi action crime thriller film set in the 1980s in Gujarat, India, and revolves around Raees Alam, a bootlegger who rises to power in the underworld despite the efforts of a tough police officer. Adding to that, the superb casting of Shah Rukh Khan as the lead protagonist makes the film an engaging watch. Secondly, the pairing with Pakistani actress Mahira Khan and the supporting role by Nawazuddin Siddiqui make it a wholesome watch. Directed by Rahul Dholakia, the film has top-notch screenplay that keeps you on the edge of your seats, guessing what is the next move. While there are some flaws including cliched dialogues and melodramatic sequences, it is also appreciated for being an overall entertaining and thrilling movie. All in all, Raees is a must-watch for fans of action films and those looking for a gripping story with strong performances.

Following military tensions between Pakistan and India in 2016, various Pakistani artists were banned from working in India. There was similar pressure applied on the makers of Raees to replace Pakistani actress, Mahira Khan. The film's producer, Farhan Akhtar refused to do so and the female lead remained the same.
After Farhan Akhtar opted out of the film, he approached Fardeen Khan to sign the film. Fardeen declined the role as he said he was taking a break from acting and would only return in a home production. That is when Nawazuddin was signed.
Rumored to be inspired by the life of Gujarat based gangster, Abdul Latif.
The film was originally supposed to release on Eid 2016, however, the release date was postponed to 25th January 2017.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui replaced Farhan Akthar.
