Sanjay Dutt makes his film debut. Shamlal is a union leader for the workers of construction company Ratanlal, who is tragically killed just when safety negotiations begin, leaving behind a devastated family. Shamlal's youngest son Rakesh takes his father's death the hardest, having fits whenever his family comes near. As a result, he is given up for adoption, and renamed Rocky, and assumes a carefree life with a new family. When Rocky reaches adulthood he falls in love, only to reveal buried traumas about his past.

Real life father and son Sunil Dutt and Sanjay Dutt play father and son in this film. They would be cast as father and son again in "Kshatriya" (1993) and lastly in "Muna Bhai M.B.B.S." (2003)
While shooting for a scene there was a huge crowd gathered where some one passed obscene comment on Tina Munim.Sanjay Dutt got hold of the guy tore all his clothes took him to his van and tied him nude over there for an hour.
Anil Kapoor auditioned for the small role of Sanjay Dutt's friend in the latter's debut film Rocky, in struggling days. He was rejected. Gulshan Grover bagged the role afterwards.
The music in the song "Aa Dekhen Zara, Kis Mein Kitna Hain Dum" is a reworking of Jeff Waynes "War of the Worlds". The same music was used for the intro music for the song "Yeh Zindagi Hain Ek Juaa" from the movie, Zindagi Ek Juaa. The War of Worlds instrumental was earlier also used in the title music of "Bambai Ka Maharaja".
Nargis (Acclaimed actress, Actor Sanjay Dutt's Mother and Director Sunil Dutt's wife) underwent treatment for the cancer of the pancreas at Solane Kettering Hospital in New York (USA). When her condition deteriorated upon her return to India, she was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Bombay. She sank into a coma on May 2, 1981 and breathed her last on Sunday, May 3, 1981. Her absence at the premiere of this film on May 7, 1981, where one seat was kept vacant for her, was an unforgettable event. Strangely, her presence was felt even more in her absence.
