Ewan McGregor had to learn how to fly fish for his role as Dr. Alfred "Fred" Jones.
The khanjar or jambiyya (the curved daggers carried in the belt by many of the Yemenis in this movie) are the Omani style. Typically in Yemen, the sheath is much narrower and highly curved at the tip. Also, normally, they are only worn at formal occasions with national dress - similar to sgian dubh in Scotland.
When Dr. Alfred "Fred" Jones (Ewan McGregor) goes to Harriet Chetwode-Talbot's (Emily Blunt's) apartment, he is shown walking in the opposite direction of the other people in the street, similar to the salmon which swims against the current.
The salmon are delivered to the project in tanks slung under Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopters. U.S. military helicopter manufacturers tend to name aircraft after Native American tribes, in this case, the Chinook people of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. However, the Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is also a species of salmon.
When rehearsing with an instrumental ensemble in the church, Mary Jones (Rachael Stirling) is playing the sackbut (a Baroque precursor to the trombone) and Dr. Alfred "Fred" Jones (Ewan McGregor) is playing a bass viol (a precursor to the cello).
"Dr. Alfred Jones: I don't know anyone that goes to church anymore. Harriet: I don't think I do. Dr. Alfred Jones: On Sundays we go to Tesco's."
"Dr. Alfred Jones: There was a moment when I had everything, but... Well, now I don't know what to do. Sheikh Muhammed: When the time comes, you will know."
