Jon Bernthal's character; Shotgun, has a tattoo on his neck that says PEN1. It stands for Public Enemy No. 1. PEN1 is a white street gang from Orange County California.

The "Beast" character is loosely based on white supremacist; Stephen Cingel.

The prison where Money and The Beast are locked is Corcoran, the same prison as Felon, the other prison film from director Ric Roman Waugh.

Jacob's cell number is 13, which is also his hotel room number when his son comes to visit.
