The plane that Quinn flies is a DeHavilland Beaver. Star Harrison Ford is a licensed pilot and owns a DeHaviland Beaver but he also flew the one in the movie. He had to go through several certifications for the insurance company to allow him not only to fly, but to also fly with the rest of the cast in the plane.
Temuera Morrison and Cliff Curtis are speaking Maori in their roles as pirates. However they didn't know how to say the complex lines they were supposed to (about gold and pirates, etc), so they just ad-libbed random everyday stuff such as what they were cooking for dinner. (From Temuera's biography "Temuera Morrison: From Haka to Hollywood").
It's the same island where the movie King Kong (1976) was filmed.
There is a 27-year age difference between the two leads who are romantic interests. When Robin (Anne Heche) asks Quinn (Harrison Ford) how old he is, Quinn hints that he's over fifty before whispering to her the answer (To which she says "You still look good," and Quinn replies, "I still am good!"). Ford was 55 by the time this movie came out.
At her audition, Anne Heche told Harrison Ford that Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) was the first movie she ever saw.
"Robin: I've flown with you twice and you've crashed half the time."
"Robin Monroe: What are you looking at? Quinn Harris: Nothing. Robin Monroe: Something. Quinn Harris: Nothing. Robin Monroe: Oh, don't give me that, you were ogling. Quinn Harris: Ogling? Let me ask you something. When you go into a department store to buy something like that what do you say to the clerk 'give me that outfit so no one will look at me?' Robin Monroe: No, I like people looking - just not you. Quinn Harris: If it makes you feel any better you're not my type. Robin Monroe: Oh good, why? Quinn Harris: Why? Robin Monroe: Yeah, you know, I'm making conversation. Why? Quinn Harris: You talk too much. You're opinionated. You're stubborn, sarcastic, and stuck up! Your ass is too narrow and your tits are too small. Robin Monroe: Hey, you wanna know why you're not my type? Quinn Harris: Nope."
