Reimagines the events of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge, in Suffolk, England. It is the site of two early medieval cemeteries that date from the 6th to 7th centuries. One cemetery had an undisturbed ship burial with a wealth of Anglo-Saxon artifacts. Most of these objects are now held by the British Museum.
Ralph Fiennes, with his brother, helped establish an archaeological field school based in Cheshire. The "Poulton Research Project" is a multi-period site with a significant medieval cemetery that archaeology students and volunteers help excavate every spring/summer.
The real Basil Brown got a wage of 30 shillings a week from Mrs. Pretty. In the movie this was written in the unseen letter.
Rory Lomax is fictional. The true photographers of the dig site were Mercie Lack and Barbara Wagstaff.
At 1:08:48- The story that Peggy recounts to Rory about Cellist Beatrice Harrison playing duets with nightingales in a Surrey garden is a true story.
"Basil Brown: Robert, we all fail. Every day. There are some things we just can't succeed at no matter how hard we try. I know it's not what you want to hear."
"Basil Brown: Mark my words May. I won't receive any credit. I won't even be a footnote."
