The two main cast, Dylan O'Brien and Britt Robertson dated off-set.
The character Aubrey Miller mentions at the theater that cheesy romance is strictly for Nicholas Sparks books. Ironically, Britt Robertson, the actress portraying Aubrey would go on to star as Sophia Danko in The Longest Ride, an adaptation from a Nicholas Sparks novel.
At the beginning of the movie (Silly Boy song) Aubrey appears four times but you can barely notice her. You can recognize her by clothes and bag.
Aubrey at the parking lot scene says that she is afraid that she is not going to be strong enough to be on her own, but in real life Britt Robertson moved to LA with her grandmother and away from her family when she was just 14 years old. Two years later her grandma left and she started living on her own despite being only 16.
Britt's character Aubrey is a junior in high school and Dylan's character David is a senior, but Robertson is actually a year older than O'Brien.
"Dave Hodgman: You dig me."
"Dave Hodgman: Jane, Janie, Lately I've been feeling like there's so much noise, ya know? uh so much static. all these voices competing for attention. teachers, parents, magazines. what's in, what's out, who's cool, who's not cool enough... and it's like all this shit gets so loud I feel like I cant even hear myself think. I just want to get in my car and drive... but then I see you, I see you across the hall leaning against your locker... in that jacket that you love so much... and the way you tuck your hair back behind your ears... then you see me and you smile but just smile and it's like, it's like all that noise fades away ya know... and then the only thing I can hear is the sound of your voice when you call out my name."
