TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Patrick Stewart previously played Henry's son, Richard the Lionheart, in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993).

Glenn Close was aged 55 when she played Queen Eleanor - six years younger than Eleanor had been in 1183 when ''Lion in Winter" takes place.Patrick Stewart was aged 63 when he played King Henry who had in fact been eleven years younger than Eleanor. The Lion in Winter (1968) had more accurately presented the royal couple in terms of age, Katharine Hepburn being then Eleanor's age of 61 and Peter O'Toole being substantially younger: in fact at age 36 O'Toole was 14 years younger than the character he played.

The role of Queen Eleanor in the original Broadway production had been played by Rosemary Harris who cameoed as the Player Queen in the Glenn Close starring vehicle Hamlet (1990).

Glenn Close role immediately prior to Queen Eleanor had been as co-star in The Divorce (2003): another of that film's co-stars: Stockard Channing, had in 1999 played Queen Eleanor in ''Lion in Winter'''s one Broadway revival to-date.

While attending the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Patrick Stewart and his fellow students had been required to view the productions of the theatre's professional troupe, whose regular male star: Peter O'Toole, Stewart would state "became for me the benchmark for what a charismatic character should be." Stewart had seen The Lion in Winter (1968) when it was first released but felt it unnecessary to view O'Toole's performance as King Henry in preparation for himself (Stewart) playing the role: "I was so strongly influenced by [O'Toole]- certainly by his intensity and charisma - that the last thing I needed to do when I was playing this part was to sit down and watch him in the role."

Popular Dialogues

"John: He has a knife, a knife! Eleanor of Aquitaine: Of course he has a knife! I have a knife. We all have knives. It's 1183 and we're all barbarians!"

"King Henry II: Now listen to me boy... Philip: [holds up a finger to stop him] I am a king, I am no man's boy!"
