Production began in May 2023 but was suspended in June 2023 due to the Writer's Guild of America strike. Production was set to resume after the end of the strike but was further delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. With both strikes ending in September and November respectively, production resumed on December 12, 2023 and wrapped on January 14, 2024.
The film takes some liberties with the true events surrounding ASU wrestling and Anthony Robles walking on. ASU alumni Thom Ortiz was actually the coach at ASU when Anthony was a walk on and had to be persuaded by Mesa High coach Bobby Williams to allow Anthony Robles to try out. Later when ASU dropped their wrestling program, it was only temporary and it was reinstated less than 2 weeks later, not an entire year as depicted in the film. When the program was reinstated, Coach Ortiz was fired and Shawn Charles was hired on as coach.
William Goldenberg's directorial debut.
The real Anthony Robles was the stunt double for Jharrel Jerome.
In reality Anthony Robles had never wrestled Matt McDonough before they met in the NCAA finals his senior year. McDonough was the defending champion that year though. Also their finals match was much less dramatic than the movie showed. In reality Robles ran out to an 8-0 lead in the first period and McDonough only got a stalling point against Robles in the 3rd period making the final score 8-1. Also this was Anthony Robles first trip to the NCAA finals. He had been an All American the previous 2 years placing 7th and 4th.
