The Pale Blue Eye Review

Directed by Scott Cooper, "The Pale Blue Eye" is an adaptation of the novel from author Louis Bayard. It's a murder mystery thriller that takes place in the 1830s and with the amazing cast consisting of Harry Melling, Christian Bale, Gillian Anderson, Robert Duvall, Lucy Bonton, and Toby Jones- it did justice. Harry Melling steals the whole show with her stunning performance in the movie. The cinematography is looking fantastic because of the use of natural lighting drab color palette which creates an ominous and dark tone that was the need of the movie in order to make it more eye appealing. The storyline includes so many twists and turns that will keep the audience captivated throughout the movie. The music enhances the spectral atmosphere created in the movie. The authenticity in the costumes and setup adds more beauty in it. This movie will be a great pick if you are fond of classic mystery tales. It's definitely going to be one of the best historical movies that you would have seen in a while.

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Movie title comes from the following: "One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture -- a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees -- very gradually -- I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye for ever." From Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" (1843) [TJN - 01/06/2023]

Edgar promises to honor Landor by including him in a future story. Poe's final short story is entitled "Landor's Cottage."

Edgar Allan Poe actually attended West Point for a while around 1830, and had already seen the first of his poetry published.

The pub owner is named Benny. This marks the tavern as "Benny Havens" a well-known and long-run establishment in the village of Buttermilk Falls (now Highland Falls), adjacent to West Point. The tavern existed from the earliest days of the Academy and as of this movie's release, a bar using this historic name still exists in Highland Falls, NY.

Although the film is set in the USA and the characters are American, most of the cast is British.

Popular Dialogues

"Cadet Edgar Allan Poe: [walking through the snow-covered cemetery] To enjoy the Highlands in the full extent of their glory, it must seen immediately after the fall of the leaf. Lea Marquis: Why is that? Cadet Edgar Allan Poe: Vegetation does not improve, but rather obstructs God's originating design. Lea Marquis: A romantic... You do enjoy talking about God and death, don't you? Cadet Edgar Allan Poe: I do consider death to be one of poetry's most exalted themes."

"Augustus Landor: I do believe that the Academy takes away the young man's will. Advances him with regulations and rules. Deprives him of reason. It makes him less human. Captain Hitchcock: Are you implying the Academy is to blame for these deaths? Augustus Landor: Someone connected to the Academy, yes. Hence he Academy itself. Captain Hitchcock: Well that's absurd. By your standard, every crime committed by a Christian will be a stain on Christ. Augustus Landor: And so it is."
