Originally planned to be an AMC original film for television, it was later announced that it would be a film trilogy with a wide theatrical release by Universal Pictures. However, over the pandemic and news of the mothership concluding, it transitioned itself into a television miniseries.

The miniseries will consist of six episodes, while the titles of the last three haven't been revealed yet, the first three have. The first episode is titled Years (2024), the second Gone (2024) and the third Bye (2024). The titles mirror the title of the pilot of the original series Days Gone Bye (2010) (also the title of the first issue of the comics), symbolizing how Rick's journey has come full circle.
