When first released, this movie played as the bottom half of a double bill with Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956).
The werewolf in this film was the screen's first science-fictional, non-supernatural lycanthrope. While possessed of incredible strength and ferocity, he could be killed by ordinary bullets ( don't need silver bullets ) and didn't require a full moon to cause transformation.
This isn't the first time Clay Campbell created a werewolf makeup. He used the same techniques to create the monster for an earlier film, The Return of the Vampire (1943).
Director Fred F. Sears also served as the narrator in the opening sequence.
Probably to save time and/or money, shots of the werewolf fleeing the posse near the climax, were shot "day-for-night" while the posse shots were filmed during real nighttime.
"Amy Standish: Jack, what are you trying to do, scare us half to death? Sheriff Jack Haines: It wasn't an animal that killed Joe. The same goes for Clovey. It was a man. Amy Standish: There were teeth marks of an animal on Joe's throat. Dr. Jonas Gilcrist: She's right about the teeth marks. Sheriff Jack Haines: I think we both are. Dr. Jonas Gilcrist: Well, it had to be either animal OR man. Amy Standish: There is a word for what you're saying, Jack. Sheriff Jack Haines: Yeah, I went to school, Amy. Dr. Jonas Gilcrist: Werewolf?"
"Dr. Emery Forrest: But to take a stranger, a man injured in an accident, and give him a full inoculation of that serum. Dr. Morgan Chambers: Yes, I'd almost forgotten about him. So much could fail if he should remember and tell someone what he knows about us. There's nothing else left but to-... Dr. Emery Forrest: You're not going to kill him! Dr. Morgan Chambers: You think he still wants to live after what he's become? It would be an act of charity."
