While the characters made several references to Portland for business and home in St. Louis, all of the U.S. scenes were filmed in Boston. Boston is never mentioned in the movie.
Dan Trunkman (Vince Vaughn) and his company, Apex Select, deal in "swarf", which are most frequently metal filings produced by machine cutting. Swarf has several uses, including serving as lightweight construction materials in the automobile industry.
Just before they hit the deer, they say on the phone they are on the Autobahn, but it is just a Bundesstraße, and the speed limit is one hundred kilometers (sixty-two miles) per hour, so they are travelling way over the speed limit at one hundred miles (one hundred sixty-one kilometers) per hour.
