Lucile Fray was diagnosed with cancer in 1952 and wanted to find suitable homes for her ten children, since she felt her husband could not properly care for them. Prior to her death, she succeeded. The film was directed by John Erman, written by Michael Bortman, and starred Ann-Margret in her first television film. It was originally broadcast on American Broadcasting Company. The same evening as its original broadcast, February 14, 1983, the children of Lucile Fray appeared on That's Incredible!, an ABC program.

At the Emmy Awards ceremony, Barbara Stanwyck won the award for best actress for "The Thorn Birds" over Ann-Margret for "Who Will Love My Children?" In accepting the award, Stanwyck said, "This is an honor. But the woman who should have won this award is sitting over there," pointing to Ann-Margret. "I think she gave one of the finest, most beautiful performances I have ever seen. Ann-Margret, you were superb."

A blockbuster Malayalam film ( India - kerala, not Bollywood) Akashadoothu, was inspired from this film. The actress who enacted the mother won many awards for her role.
