Android 17 Beta is arriving soon, confirms Google

Highlights
  • The Android 17 beta update will likely roll out to Pixel smartphones first.
  • Google plans to shift its focus entirely to Android 17 after releasing the final beta update on Android 16 for Pixels.
  • The update may bring several design changes and feature improvements.

Following major Android 17 design leaks over the last couple of weeks, Google has officially confirmed that the first Android 17 Beta update will go live soon. In an official Reddit post, the company notes that the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 patch will be the final version based on Android 16. Going forward, Google plans to shift its focus entirely to Android 17 Platform Release (26Q2) with the Android 17 Beta 1 update.

The Reddit post goes on to state the procedure to install the stable public Android 16 QPR3 update, without dropping any hints on the features or changes the Android 17 Beta 1 update will bring. But what it does reveal is that the first Android 17 Beta will build upon Android 16 by including the latest bug fixes and improvements to stability and performance. While not explicitly mentioned, since the subreddit in question is mainly known for posting Android updates for Google Pixels, the beta will first be rolled out to eligible Pixel phones, as has been the tradition with previous Android releases.

It’s also worth noting that the update which Google is referring to in the post is not a Developer Preview build, meaning users with a supported Pixel smartphone will be able to directly install the beta update once it’s made available. Historically, Developer Previews tend to contain more bugs and instability compared to Beta versions. So, those who’re willing to get their hands on Android 17 early on, the update may not have adverse effects as severe as a Developer Preview, which makes the device highly unstable to use.

While Android 17 is expected to bring advancements in security and privacy, customisation, and brand new features, here’s how it may switch up the software appearance on Pixel phones, per leaks:

  • Blur and translucent effects: In various parts of the UI, Pixel UI based on Android 17 may feature blur and translucent elements, giving the software a fresh and modern look.
  • Split quick settings panel: A major addition to Pixel UI, users could choose between a classic and split quick settings panel, just like other skins, namely ColorOS 16, One UI 8, OriginOS 8, and others. In split quick settings, swiping from the left on the status bar will reveal all your notifications, while the right side will summon the entire quick settings panel.

  • Markup option on screen recording: When initiating a screen recording, users will be able to doodle on the screen in real-time. This could come in handy to guide someone about a particular process on your phone.
  • App lock option on homescreen: Similar to OxygenOS 16 and iOS 26, Android 17 may bring the option to lock apps directly from the homescreen using PIN, password or biometrics.
Since Android 16 brought Material 3 Expressive design language, a major shift in design for Pixel smartphones, Android 17 could build upon that by refining the elements and giving existing features a polish. It’s good to see Google announcing the Android 17 beta at a time when most smartphones, especially the budget and midrange ones, are still stuck at Android 16. Rolling out the Android 17 Beta early helps Google keep Pixel in focus. At a time when many brands are still pushing Android 16, this gives Pixel users something new to look forward to.
