Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods spotted in macOS video, Visual Intelligence features teased
Apple’s long-rumoured AirPods with built-in cameras have surfaced in one of the clearest leaks yet. A video found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate by MacRumours appears to demonstrate how the earbuds could use their cameras with Apple’s Visual Intelligence features, giving Siri visual information about the user’s surroundings.
Camera-equipped AirPods could bring Visual Intelligence
The short video shows a person holding up a book while wearing the purported camera-equipped AirPods. A voiceover explains that Visual Intelligence can make the user’s surroundings “savable”, suggesting that Siri could recognise something the wearer is looking at and save relevant information for later.

That is a different approach from Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, where cameras are also used to understand the environment but can support photo and video capture. Apple’s reported implementation appears to treat the cameras primarily as sensors for AI. Instead of taking pictures, they could feed visual information to Siri, allowing users to ask questions about objects around them without reaching for an iPhone.
The software reportedly also includes a warning to keep hair away from the AirPods so their cameras can capture information from the surroundings properly. That suggests the cameras could sit in the earbuds’ stems, although Apple hasn’t confirmed the hardware.
Launch timeline unclear
The leak is interesting because Apple’s reported timeline for these AirPods has changed. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in June that the camera-equipped model, reportedly codenamed B798, had been pushed to late 2027 amid delays with Apple’s AI and Siri work. However, recent software references to another model, B790, have fuelled speculation about an earlier AirPods launch. The exact relationship between B790 and the camera-equipped model remains unclear, so a September debut should not be treated as confirmed.
If Apple does eventually launch camera-equipped AirPods, they could occupy a category between conventional wireless earbuds and smart glasses. The pitch would be about making AI available without requiring users to hold up a phone. That could make them compelling for existing AirPods users interested in Apple’s AI ecosystem, but there are obvious questions around privacy, battery life and price. For now, buyers looking for better audio should not delay an AirPods purchase solely because of this.
