Google has been working on ways to make it easier for people to learn new information that they search for online. It launched a generative AI-powered Search experience tool called ‘SGE’ few months ago. Google has updated this AI tool with new features to help you understand complex topics easier, and even improve your coding skills.
SGE while browsing
‘SGE while browsing’ has been launched for the Google app on Android and iOS, and it is rolling out to Chrome on desktop in the coming days. This is one of the updates to SGE, and it aims to summarise long and complex articles on the web. What it essentially does is break an article into bullet points with all the important information that one would need from the story.
This generative AI tool is aimed at making it easier to read long-form articles. This is however, applicable only to articles that are free to read, and not those that are behind a paywall. You will see the feature below an article with the option to generate AI-powered key points. It will then pull out key points of the article along with important questions below. SGE while browsing is available only in Search Labs so you’ll have to join this programme to try out the experiment.
Definitions for AI-generated responses
Google’s AI-generated responses for topics such as science, economics and history will now include definitions for certain words. When you hover around certain words, you’ll be able to preview definitions, and also see related diagrams or images.
Coding with AI
SGE already has tools that can help you with coding, and these include finding answers to how-to questions, and see suggested code snippets for common tasks. SGE will now start colour code segments of code in overviews with syntax highlighting. This will help in identifying elements like keywords, comments and strings.
AI in Google Photos
Google has been pushing AI in almost all of its products. Google Photos is also getting a big AI boost for the ‘Memories’ feature that can be equally fun and painful for people. Soon you will start seeing AI curated photos and videos for new Memories mashups, and even add names to them. This feature will however be limited to select users as it’s still in testing.
