The iPhone 17 series made its much-awaited debut last night with an all-new iPhone Air, bold-coloured iPhone 17 Pro models, and a standard iPhone 17, but now featuring a bigger display. As with every new iPhone launch, Apple reduces the prices of older iPhone models, making them even more attractive to buyers in India, especially with additional discounts during festive sales. Flipkart has already announced that the iPhone 16 will be available for Rs 51,999 as part of its Big Billion Days sale. Last year’s iPhone 16 has officially received a Rs 10,000 price cut following yesterday’s Apple event. This isn’t unusual for Apple, as the brand’s long-standing strategy is to keep older iPhones on sale at reduced prices, especially in India, where affordability plays a huge role. By doing this, Apple not only clears inventory but also pulls more users into its ecosystem, banking on long-term revenue from services and accessories.
But is it still worth buying, or should you stretch for the iPhone 17?
Launched at Rs 79,900, the iPhone 16 now starts at Rs 69,900 for the base 128GB variant on the official Apple India website. The forthcoming Amazon and Flipkart festive sales (from September 23rd) could drive the effective price even lower, possibly bringing it under Rs 60,000. If you’ve been waiting to buy the iPhone 16, this is the right time to consider it.
Despite being a year old, the iPhone 16 remains a strong package. It features a redesigned camera module, incorporates elements from the Pro series, and includes Apple’s A18 chip with 8GB of RAM, marking a significant two-generation leap. The A18 outperformed rivals like the Exynos 2400, Tensor G4, and Dimensity 9300, while being power-efficient and Apple Intelligence-ready. Paired with the extra RAM, it handles daily tasks smoothly. When it comes to software updates, Apple is known to offer support for several years, so there’s no worry on the front.
The cameras still hold up well, delivering sharp photos, natural portraits, solid low-light performance, and stable videos. The new Undertone options in Photographic Styles allow greater control. Battery life is dependable, offering 5–6 hours of screen-on time and excellent standby, which can last into the next day with light usage. The iPhone 16 can charge to 50 per cent in 30 minutes.
Drawbacks? The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display remains capped at 60Hz, and there’s no always-on display, features common even in budget Androids. While the display isn’t bad, the absence of these upgrades means you miss out on smoother scrolling, snappier animations, and an overall richer viewing experience.
Still, the iPhone 16 offers reliable performance, good cameras, and really long software support, making it a smart buy, especially for those upgrading from older iPhones.
The iPhone 17 is arguably the most upgraded vanilla model in years. It finally gets an adaptive 120Hz ProMotion display with always-on support, along with a slightly larger 6.3-inch screen. This is ideal for anyone who wants a larger screen without paying the Pro or Air premium. However, fans of Apple’s traditional compact form factor will miss out.
Power comes from the faster A19 chip, claimed to be 20 per cent faster than the A18. The cameras see big changes too: an all-new 18MP front camera with Center Stage, Dual Capture, and Ultra-stabilised video, plus a bump in the ultra-wide lens from 12MP to 48MP. Apple also promises longer battery life with up to 8 hours more video playback time, and it will charge slightly faster over wired charging compared to its predecessor.
On paper, Apple has delivered upgrades to the iPhone 17 exactly where they were needed. The vanilla model finally feels like a substantial step up, making it appealing for buyers who’ve been holding out for a meaningful update. That said, the starting price is now higher at Rs 82,900, up from the iPhone 16’s launch price of Rs 79,900. But you also get twice the base storage now at 256GB.
Following the price cut on iPhone 16, you’re looking at a Rs 13,000 price difference, which could be a deciding factor. For those prioritising value, the iPhone 16 remains attractive, especially during the festive sales. But if you want the latest display, performance, and camera upgrades, the iPhone 17 may justify spending extra.
