It’s barely been two months since the launch of the iPhone 17 series, and rumours about Apple’s next lineup have already started coming in. A new leak from Chinese tipster Instant Digital hints that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro may arrive in three new colours: Burgundy, Coffee, and Purple. He also adds there won’t be a black iPhone Pro. While Purple has appeared before in several iPhone generations with iPhone 14 Pro being the latest, Burgundy and Coffee would be completely new additions to Apple’s colour palette.
If the leaks are accurate, this may signal another pivot in Apple’s design strategy. The company, known for minimalist tones such as Silver, Gold, and Space Grey, has begun to experiment more boldly in recent years. On the iPhone 17 Pro, for example, Apple offered Cosmic Orange, a rare flourish of colour in its otherwise subtle and minimalistic Pro range. To date, Apple has reserved its quirkier shades, such as Blue, Yellow, Lavender and Sage, for the base iPhone models, seen this year too.
The new Burgundy and Coffee options could well reflect Apple’s efforts to appeal to more youthful buyers and content creators who tend to view their smartphones as personal style statements. Phones show up in selfies, fashion reels, and unboxing videos, and the recent hype around the Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro could be fuelling the belief.
While this experimentation may still be new for Apple, rival brands have already gone down this path. Samsung offered a Burgundy finish on its Galaxy S22 Ultra in 2022, while the Motorola Edge 60 Pro launched in April this year came in a Pantone-certified Walnut shade, which could be pretty close to Apple’s rumoured Coffee tone.
Beyond the looks, rumours suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro will also boast Apple’s new A20 chip on TSMC’s 2nm process node, which offers significant gains in power efficiency and AI performance. It is expected to sport an under-display Face ID sensor and a 6.26-inch LTPO OLED display.
By introducing these warm and distinctive hues, Apple could be looking to position the iPhone 18 Pro as both technologically advanced and fashion-forward. It ties into the company’s larger brand philosophy of blending innovation with personality, something it has been doing gradually since the days of colourful iMacs (2021) and pastel iPhones.
For buyers, these new finishes could make choosing an iPhone more personal than ever. Burgundy may appeal to those who want something bold and elegant, while Coffee may offer a subtle, luxurious twist. If you’re planning to upgrade from the iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro series which came in neutral finishes and are looking for a pop of colour now, it may be worth waiting to see if these new colour options make it to launch, especially if the iPhone 17 Pro Cosmic Orange isn’t your flavour. The iPhone 18 Pro could appeal to those who value both performance and design flair, combining Apple’s latest hardware with fresh, fashion-forward finishes.
