The iQOO 15 launched in India last November as one of the first phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. It’s a power-packed smartphone (review) featuring a 2K OLED panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, a large 7,000mAh battery, a 3x periscope telephoto lens, and several AI features. The iQOO 15 is still fresh on the racks, but rumours about its successor, the iQOO 16, have already surfaced online.
Early details about the iQOO 16 were shared by tipster Smart Pikachu on Weibo. The leak suggests that iQOO will be one of the few brands to test Samsung’s 2K display with 165Hz and 185Hz refresh rates. The post also mentions iQOO 16 in a hashtag, possibly suggesting we would see the new display on this smartphone. The tipster adds that, in addition to a 165Hz panel, a Samsung 185Hz panel is also in the pipeline, and the gaming ecosystem is already adapting to this high refresh rate.
Also, not just Samsung but domestic Chinese displays are also said to follow the same route, eventually producing 165Hz and 185Hz panels.
At present, the OnePlus 15 and OnePlus 15R both feature a 165Hz display and support 165FPS gaming for select titles. With a 165Hz refresh rate, the iQOO 16 would be catching up to the OnePlus 15, as the iQOO 15 currently supports 144Hz. But what would be a bigger upgrade for the iQOO 16 is a 185Hz refresh rate, which would elevate the phone’s gaming capabilities. This would, in turn, mean 185FPS gaming support on the iQOO 16, which would result in smooth visuals and low latency, further improving the overall experience.
If 185Hz sounds impressive to you, then you haven’t heard about the OnePlus 16 yet. Early rumours suggest the OnePlus 16 will feature a display with a refresh rate above 200Hz. This is something we’re used to seeing on gaming monitors and laptops, but not on a smartphone yet. With a refresh rate of 200Hz or higher, the OnePlus 16 would definitely top the gaming phone charts.
These expected specifications do give us a good idea of what to expect from the next lineup of flagships later this year. There’s still a lot of time for the iQOO 16 to launch, which could take place towards the end of the year. For now, the iQOO 15 is more than capable as a gaming smartphone, but to experience a higher level or an even better experience would be to wait for the iQOO 16. What we can say is that the iQOO 16 will be best suited for gaming enthusiasts or power users.
