The OnePlus 15 launched in India yesterday as the first flagship in the country powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It arrives with several firsts and bold changes — including OnePlus’ own camera system, a refreshed design, and a higher price than the OnePlus 13. And this is just the beginning. OnePlus has more devices on the way, with the brand even teasing the OnePlus 15R at the launch event, a more affordable alternative to the OnePlus 15.
OnePlus hasn’t revealed anything about the 15R yet, but as tradition, it will most likely launch as the global variant of the OnePlus Ace 6. This smartphone was launched alongside the flagship 15 in China. Based on this speculation and proven history, we can expect the OnePlus 15R to carry the same specifications and design as the Ace 6. Another indicator is that the OnePlus Ace 6 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, a generation-old chipset, like every other R series phone.
As for the rest of the specifications, the OnePlus 15R would come with a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate, an impressive 5,000 nits peak brightness. This is a slightly bigger display than the OnePlus 13R (6.77-inch), brighter too by 500 nits, and an even higher refresh rate, like the flagship 15. The Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset is paired with up to 16GB LPDDR5X Ultra RAM and up to 1TB UFS 4.1 storage. There’s also a dedicated G2 gaming chip to boost graphics performance.
The improvements extend to durability as well, with the phone boasting four IP ratings — IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K, making it highly resistant to dust, water, and even high-pressure jets. It also gets the Plus Key, which can be customised for quick actions like launching the camera, turning on the flashlight, or opening the AI Plus Mind Space.
Another significant enhancement is the 7,800mAh battery on the 15R, the largest ever seen on a smartphone yet, paired with 120W fast charging, which remains among the fastest available. Like its predecessor, however, the 15R still does not support wireless charging.
On the software front, the OnePlus 15R will most likely ship with the latest OxygenOS 16 out of the box. For imaging, the 15R features a dual rear camera setup with a 50MP primary sensor with OIS and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. On the front, you get a 16MP camera for selfies and video calls. This might disappoint some, as OnePlus has dropped the telephoto lens for the 15R, which is available on the 13R and supports 2x optical zoom for distant shots. Likely, there won’t be changes for the global version of OnePlus Ace 6, but let’s still wait for official confirmation.
Based on these details, the OnePlus 15R is shaping up to be a meaningful step forward from the 13R. If OnePlus keeps the pricing unchanged, unlike with the OnePlus 15, the 15R could land around Rs 42,999 in India, making it a compelling alternative to pricier flagships. The phone also gets a refreshed design with a smaller camera module that resembles the compact 13s.
It will be interesting to see how these improvements translate to real-world performance, but as of now, the OnePlus 15R certainly looks like a device worth waiting for, whether you’re after a flagship alternative or a premium mid-range option.
