OnePlus Open 2 global launch reportedly cancelled; OnePlus 15s India launch chances could be slim

Highlights
  • OnePlus Open 2 would have succeeded the 2023 OnePlus Open.
  • Its global launch was reportedly supposed to take place this summer.
  • OnePlus 15s India launch might also be cancelled.

Three years after the original OnePlus Open shook up the foldable market and briefly made Samsung look over its shoulder, the sequel that fans have been waiting for may not arrive, at least in the near future. According to a report by SmartPrix, citing industry insider Yogesh Brar, the global launch of the OnePlus Open 2 has been cancelled. The device was internally positioned as OnePlus’ big summer release for 2026, with a worldwide debut planned for early Q3, but that roadmap has now been quietly abandoned.

The first OnePlus Open was launched in 2023, with a successor highly anticipated in the future. Despite being OnePlus’s first foldable, it managed to make a mark and give Samsung’s fourth-generation Galaxy Z Fold5 tough competition in several key areas. Software polish was largely on point, even if Samsung still had the stronger ecosystem. The OnePlus Open also briefly made it feel like OnePlus could actually lead the foldable race. That momentum now seems to have evaporated.

OnePlus Open

While OnePlus has not officially stated the reason for pulling the plug on the Open 2, one of the major reasons could be component prices, especially for high-density RAM and ultra-fast storage. Even standard flagships are creeping up in price, which we’ve already seen with the recent launches, and ultra-premium devices like foldables are increasingly risky bets in cost-sensitive markets.

SmartPrix reports that the Open 2 was already in advanced testing when the decision was made. Interestingly, the hardware itself isn’t being wasted. The same source suggests the underlying device will still launch in select markets under OPPO branding as the Find N6, but there’s no confirmation yet on where exactly this foldable will be available.

From what is known, the OnePlus Open 2 was shaping up to be a true generational leap. It was expected to feature an 8.12-inch 2K folding display and a 6.6-inch AMOLED cover screen, both pushing a 165Hz refresh rate. Power would come from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. The camera setup was tipped to include three 50MP rear sensors, alongside a 32MP selfie camera on the outer display and a 20MP unit inside. A 6,000mAh battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging was also on the cards.

Even the design sounded like a statement piece, with prototypes sporting a black faux-leather finish and a chassis inspired by the Huawei Mate X7, while production colours were expected to include Black and a new Titanium shade.

If the cancellation holds, buyers in markets like India will be left with fewer alternatives to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup, unless OPPO decides to bring the Find N6 more widely. For OnePlus fans, though, the message is clear: the brand that once looked ready to disrupt the foldable hierarchy may now be stepping away just when the race was getting interesting.

And it may not just be the Open 2 that’s not arriving in India. After launching the OnePlus 13T in China last April and reworking it for India as the OnePlus 13s, the company was expected to repeat the strategy this year with the OnePlus 15T and the India-bound OnePlus 15s. That plan now appears shaky. Tipster  Yogesh Brar claims there is nearly a 90 percent chance that the OnePlus 15s has been cancelled for India. The device had reportedly entered testing and was earlier tipped for a February launch, but has since been delayed with no revised timeline in sight. The OnePlus Nord 6, which is speculated to launch as a rebranded version of the Turbo 6, is also reportedly delayed.

There’s no official confirmation yet, so it’s best to take all this information with a pinch of salt. OnePlus 13s impressed us as a compact flagship, and the 15s is expected to continue the new legacy, while the Nord 6 could offer one of the biggest batteries on a commercial phone in India
