Sony has announced the latest version of its flagship noise-cancelling earbuds, the WF-1000XM6. They arrive three years after the widely used WF-1000XM5 and focus on improving noise reduction, sound quality and call clarity rather than changing the design.
The main upgrade over the 1000XM5 is noise cancellation. Sony says it is about 25 percent more effective than on the XM5, particularly at reducing voices and other mid-frequency sounds you hear in places like cafes, trains or open offices. The earbuds use a new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e alongside the Integrated Processor V2, which analyses ambient sound and fit in real time and adjusts automatically. Each earbud now has four microphones instead of three, and the new ear tips come in four sizes to improve the seal.
Sony has also made the earbuds about 11 percent slimmer and added a ventilation system to reduce the occlusion effect — the internal thumping sound some people notice when walking or chewing. The WF-1000XM6 is available in Black and Platinum Silver.
Audio performance sees smaller, technical upgrades. A redesigned driver uses a hybrid diaphragm to deliver stronger bass and clearer highs, while processing moves from 24-bit to 32-bit. The earbuds support LDAC, DSEE Extreme and 360 Reality Audio. Call quality is improved through additional microphones and AI-based voice isolation. Bluetooth 5.3 support aims to improve connection stability and reduce latency for video and gaming.
The WF-1000XM6 is priced at USD 330 globally (around Rs 30,000) and goes on sale in February. That keeps it in the same premium range as the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds and Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation). Bose still has an edge in blocking low-frequency noise such as aircraft rumble, while AirPods Pro remain the simpler choice for iPhone users. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds3 Pro target Galaxy users with ecosystem features but offer less detail with high-bitrate audio.
For Android users who want strong noise cancellation and support for high-quality codecs such as LDAC, Sony’s latest model remains one of the more flexible options in the premium segment.
