Vivo X200 Pro camera review: a worthy successor to the X100 Pro

Much like the Vivo X100 Pro, the Vivo X200 Pro is an excellent camera phone for anyone looking to capture a wide variety of photographic shots and styles with ease. It’s the kind of device that can excite even non-photographers. Personally, I was able to take stunning shots with the Vivo X200 Pro that I wouldn’t have been able to capture otherwise. The X200 Pro offers features like ZEISS-style portraits, macro shots using the telephoto lens, long-exposure stills at night, a new street photography mode, and more – all of which I’ll showcase in my full review.

In this dedicated review, we take a look at some standard photo modes that you get on the X200 Pro and compare them with the OPPO Find X8 Pro (review) and iPhone 16 Pro. I sat down with my colleagues to compare the X200 Pro’s images with its competitors across scenarios like daylight, ultrawide, portrait, selfie, and low-light to find out which phone does better in which situation.

Verdict

The Vivo X200 Pro is, hands down, the best out of the lot when it comes to low light photography. The phone was able to capture exceptional colour reproduction with balanced exposure and details where other would falter. In daylight, portraits and selfies, the iPhone 16 Pro performed better, with the Vivo X200 Pro and Find X8 Pro close behind. Vivo, however, offers a versatile camera setup that includes ZEISS multi-focal modes and bokeh effects as well as a tele-macro camera for stunning close-ups.

Pros

  • Vivo X200 Pro delivers sharp daylight shots, excels in low-light photography
  • The flagship also offers stunning portraits, on par with the likes of the Find X8 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro
  • Good variety of shooting modes, including tele-macro for stunning close-up shots

Cons

  • Colours in daylight scenarios look slightly boosted compared to Find X8 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro
  • Facial features look soft in low-light portraits

Daylight

In daylight, the Vivo X200 Pro’s 50MP primary sensor tends to saturate colours more when compared to the Find X8 Pro’s 50MP camera. The latter goes for more natural colours while retaining more sharpness when zooming in. The X200 Pro, however, does a better job with capturing details in the corners of the image.

The iPhone 16 Pro performs best in daylight as it captures accurate, true-to-life colours, especially of the sky and the building in the background. However, the X200 Pro delivers better dynamic range and overall sharpness. Some might prefer the punchier colours from the X200 Pro, especially for sharing on social media.

Ultrawide

We found that the OPPO Find X8 Pro does a better job at keeping the colour science consistent between the primary and wide-angle lenses, whereas the 50MP ultra-wide lens on the X200 Pro saturates colours more. While the sky looks more colour-accurate on the X200 Pro, the Find X8 Pro captured the greenery of the hedge and the colour of the tiles of the floor more accurately.

The iPhone 16 Pro does an equally good job as OPPO in ensuring consistency between the primary and wide-angle cameras. But while colours are more accurate on the iPhone 16 Pro’s wide-angle shot, the Vivo X200 Pro does at much better job with sharpness and details, especially when zooming in. Wide-angle shots captured on the iPhone 16 Pro are also grainier compared to the X200 Pro.

Portraits

When it comes to portraits, all three phones do exceptionally well and the choice on who does better comes down to personal preference. Between the Vivo X200 Pro and OPPO Find X8 Pro, the Vivo X200 Pro did a better job at delivering a natural-looking depth effect while retaining good sharpness and details on the attire. The X200 Pro also handled shadows and light source better. However, Vivo’s flagship tends to smooth facial features while the colours of the clothes are more accurately captured by the Find X8 Pro.

The Vivo X200 Pro delivers a much more natural depth effect than the iPhone 16 Pro, with greater consistency around the edges, especially the hairs on the head. The only area where the iPhone 16 Pro does better is in the colour accuracy of the subject. But overall, most people would lean towards the attractiveness of portraits from the Vivo X200 Pro.

Selfie

The Vivo X200 Pro once again delivers admirable performance in capturing sharp and appealing selfies. However, when compared to the OPPO Find X8 Pro’s selfies, we found that the OPPO phone excels in colour accuracy of clothing, white balance, and retaining background details.

The iPhone 16 Pro, on the other hand, does the best job out of the three when it comes to offering colour-accurate skin tone and clothing, better sharpness and details across the whole image. For natural-looking selfies, the iPhone 16 Pro seems to be a safe bet.

Low-light

When it comes to low-light photography, the Vivo X200 Pro easily trumps its rivals. The phone delivers exceptional clarity in low-light shots with enough ambient lighting around. It handles exposure expertly around light sources, ensuring they don’t over-expose the entire image. This also means more realistic-looking low-light images with accurate colours.

The iPhone 16 Pro does a shabby job in low-light compared to the Vivo X200 Pro. The image captured by the iPhone appears granier around darker areas while light sources appear overexposed. The overall image is also warmer in comparison to the Vivo X200 Pro.

Final verdict

The Vivo X200 Pro takes over from where the X100 Pro left off and delivers yet another versatile camera system. This includes a better telephoto camera for enhanced portraits and macros, new street photography mode and landscape mode, among other things.

Its rear cameras deliver consistently great photos no matter the time of the day and stand toe-to-toe with the likes of the OPPO Find X8 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro, if not better in some areas. Here’s a quick recap of where the Vivo X200 Pro stands out:

  • The Vivo X200 Pro captures excellent low-light photos, although it tends to smoothen facial features if a subject is present.
  • Portraits continue to be Vivo’s strong suit and the X200 Pro does not disappoint, capturing pleasing portrait shots with natural depth effect and sharpness.
  • In addition to standard photo modes, the Vivo X200 Pro also offers a terrific telephoto lens that not only helps capture stunning portraits but also excellent close-up macros, samples of which will be shown in our full review. Stay tuned.
