LG V40 ThinQ review: six of one, and half a dozen of the other

Our take on LG s latest flagship smartphone - the V40 ThinQ

Feb 15 2019 By Prateek Pandey
PROS
  • Gorgeous display
  • Stunning design
  • Capable cameras
CONS
  • Gaming performance isn't the best
  • Selfie cameras could've been better
  • Outdated software
Verdict

The LG V40 ThinQ ticks most boxes for a premium flagship, including a gorgeous display, stunning design, capable cameras, and a day-long battery life. That said, it feels slightly overpriced for its asking price of Rs 50K, especially considering you can get the G7+ ThinQ – which, crudely put, is basically the same phone - for Rs 20K less. Add to that the smartphone`s outdated software, subpar gaming performance, and the fact that newer devices with better SoCs are just around the corner, the V40 ThinQ doesn`t come across as a steal, as some of its predecessors did. In fact, LG`s next flagship, the G8 ThinQ is expected to be unveiled in just a few days, but it`s anyone`s guess when it`ll make its way to India. If the brand can bring the cost of the V40 ThinQ down, it would make for a worthy daily driver for most. Hopefully, the price of the phone would come down in some time, or maybe they`ll be some deals available on it soon. As things stand currently, I feel that the LG V40 ThinQ has come a little too late, at a price which isn`t too competitive to make an impact in the Indian market.

India version Got pie update on Aug 1st security patch june 1
13 Feb 2019 By K.SELVARAJAN On amazon.in

EDIT : pie update new features - Penta shot, dual apps , youtube live from camera app , story shot , new edit options for pictures and videos, gestures etcPros:-best in class audio with 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC-HD audio recording you can choose sampling rate ( 44.1/48/88.2/96/176.4/192 kHz), bit depth (16/24) , file (FLAc/WAV/M4A)-full support for camera2api so all 3rd party camera apps can provide more controls-best in class camera for people who need manual mode ( 30sec shutter even note 9 have 10sec shutter) and using videography ( manual video with focus peeking , bitrate, fps , audio customizations ),- best in class haptics,- topclass LG OLED display with HDR10,- handy with good weight balance . less weight than note 9-lot of settings for customizing phone . you can customize soft buttons too-can disable many of google bloatwares, facebook, instagram.-lg provides only minimal apps like email , task and hd voice recorder . i am using email instead of gmail as i don't want to see ads.-Wireless charging-Google AR core & Google lensCons:-average battery( edit : battery looks ok 6.19 hrs screen on time . i am using greenify , gps, nfc off, disabled most google apps , lg apps )-no case included-no fm radio- no way to disable camera shutter sound(one plus 6 supports this)- hide notch in main screen but it reappear in apps-ar emoji works bad compared to note9 and iphone-only 'cheese' works in voice shutter- slippery without case ( its glass back for wireless charging )-no support from lg customer care . no replies for queries- google lens button cant be customised- wide angle camera is fixed focus so cant change focusabout amazon delivery: it was skipped 3 times. escalated the issue . amazon corrected it and finally i got the phone. initial customer care response was bad and then they improved . so no complaints.note : if you want just a point and shoot camera which do everything automatic, then buy note 9 or pixel 3 or mate 20 pro . V40 is different with audio , videography, audio recording , wide angle camera, haptics, customization ( pure google don't have customisation) . yes you may need to sacrifice fm radio and batterylg v40 case : https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07HRNH2CH

Almost a perfect flagship
04 Feb 2019 By aqib darud On amazon.in

Let me divide the review between pros and cons -Pros:1. Display is amazing, no blue tint issue like last year's models2. This phone has the best audio. period.3. Performance is smooth, no lags, freezes or heating so far.4. Design is awesome and classy (except for the notch :/)5. Tons of customizations and features in LG UI.6. Main rear camera is dependable, flagship worthy performance. Wide angle is neat too.7. Front camera is much improved from the G6 and V30 days.Cons:1. LG's skin desperately needs major refinement to look and feel more 2019.2. Android updates are still very slow with LG, and this phone is supposed to get the Pie in Q2, when Android Q will already arrive in the market.3. The phone is quite large than the last year's v30, but good thing is that it isn't super heavy like the Note 9.4. Battery backup is average, will last a full day for moderate users.5. Camera software can be improved a lot, as I see few inconsistencies in the photos sometimes.6. There is no way to turn off the camera shutter sound as of now, hope that an upgrade fixes that in the future.Giving 5 star for the reasonable pricing from LG with so many features packed inside this phone (although at 45k, it would've been stellar).

To cast your phone screen on your TV you need to have Chromecast.

Follow the steps to successfully cast your screen-

    Before you begin casting

    1. Connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network.

    2. The mobile device, tablet or computer you are using to cast must be on the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.

    3. You must be running the latest version of the Chromecast-enabled app. You can always double check that you are on the latest version by visiting the Google Play Store.

Cast from Chromecast-enabled apps to your TV

    1. Make sure that the phone you are using to cast is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast or TV with Chromecast built-in.

    Open a Chromecast-enabled app.

    2. Tap the Cast button Inactive cast extension. Note: The Cast button isn't located in the same place on all Chromecast-enabled apps.

    3. Tap the device you'd like to cast to.

    4. When you're connected, the Cast button will turn colour, letting you know you're connected.

    5. Select the app like Youtube, Browser, Google Music etc and look for the Cast icon as shown in the image below.

You can now cast videos, movies and TV shows directly to your TV.

To stop casting, tap the Cast button and then Disconnect.

You can also watch this step-by-step guide to do the same

Yes, LG V40ThinQ supports OTG. USB OTG or USB On-The-Go allows you to connect your pen drives and in some cases hard disks to your smartphone. It uses a cable and through that cable, you can directly view and use your pen drive in your smartphones.
