TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

In one of his scenes with Judi Dench, Kenneth Branagh was supposed to directly cite lines from William Shakespeare's work, but he got it slightly wrong, so Dench started to laugh at the mistake. In retort, Branagh quipped "You can probably finish it!", which she promptly did. All of this was obviously not scripted, but nonetheless kept for the finished film.

The director Kenneth Branagh said the cinematography for the interior scenes was done using only candlelight.

Ian McKellen, who played Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, to whom William Shakespeare dedicated various plays and poems including "Venus and Adonis" or "Lucretia", has played many Shakespearean roles in his career such as Richard II in The Tragedy of King Richard II (1970), Hamlet in Hamlet (1970), Macbeth in Macbeth (1979), Iago in Theatre Night: Othello (1990), Richard III in Richard III (1995) and King Lear in King Lear (2008) and National Theatre Live: King Lear (2018).

Anne Hathaway was only 8 years older than William Shakespeare. Judi Dench is 26 years older than Kenneth Branagh.

The title of the film was taken from the William Shakespeare play "Henry VIII", for which it was an early alternative title.

Popular Dialogues

"William Shakespeare: If you want to be a writer, and speak to others and for others, speak first for yourself. Search within. Consider the contents of your own soul. Your humanity. And if you're honest with yourself, then whatever you write, all is true."

"Henry: Mr. Shakespeare? I don't want to pester you. William Shakespeare: Good! Excellent news. Cheerio. Henry: I just wanted to ask you... William Shakespeare: The best way to get started as a writer is to start writing. Henry: No really, could I just... William Shakespeare: I don't have a favorite play, I admire all my fellow dramatists equally, and yes, I do think women should be allowed to perform the female roles as is the practice on the continent. Now, please do excuse me. Henry: I just wanted to ask how you knew. William Shakespeare: Knew what? Henry: Everything. William Shakespeare: My friend, I don't even know how to keep the slugs out of the Hollyhocks."
