Sir Ian McKellen (Uncle Freddie) starred in the role of Max in the original London West End theatre production in 1979.
Having played the role of Max in the original Broadway production of "Bent", Richard Gere was the original choice of the producers for the same role in this movie, but having already contracted to appear in Red Corner (1997) and The Jackal (1997), he was unavailable for the shooting schedule of this movie.
The original Broadway play, on which this movie was based, opened at the New Apollo Theater in New York City on December 2, 1979, and ran for two hundred forty-one performances. It was written by Martin Sherman, and was nominated for the 1980 Tony Award for Best Play.
David Dukes was nominated for the 1980 Tony Award for Supporting or Featured Actor in a Drama for "Bent", for his role as Horst.
In 2015, a revival of the original Broadway play was made at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
"Max: Ever go to the Silhouette? Horst: Yes. Max: I never saw you there. Horst: You weren't looking. Max: Greta's Club? Horst: No. Max: Good, you had taste. The White Mouse? Horst: Sometimes. Max: I'm surprised you never saw me there. Did you sunbathe? Horst: I love to sunbathe. Max: In the nude? Horst: Of course. Max: By the river? Horst: That's right. Max: And you never saw me? Horst: Well, actually I did. I saw you by the river. You were making a fool of yourself, and I said, someday I'll be in Dachau with that man moving rocks."
"Max: I love you... What's wrong with that?"
