IMDbBlue Valentine is a romantic drama that has a unique nonlinear plot bringing a refreshing take to the overused genre. With Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams starring as the lead actors, it first shows how they fall for each other, moving ahead to the their marriage, and then showing the events that led to it. That said, the concept seems to have worked brilliantly as the audience has lapped up the amazing performances by the lead actors. Furthermore, the plot is rather realistic, which makes it an interesting romance drama to watch especially if you are looking for something new in this space. The back and forth, nonlinearity of the story is also quite fun to watch, as the viewer is kept guessing for what to expect next in this realistic love story. It's emotionally honest, to say the least, and this is what we will say to avoid spoiling your romantic binge.

The scenes in the "past" when Dean and Cindy are falling in love were shot first, in three weeks. After this, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams spent a month together in a rented house to age themselves in preparation for the "present" scenes. They spent a lot of their time grocery shopping, cooking dinner and learning to pick fights with each other.
When filming the argument scenes, director Derek Cianfrance gave instructions to Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling individually, without the knowledge of the other, in order to create more tension between Dean and Cindy. For Williams, Cianfrance would instruct her to try to leave the room, use any way to break out of the argument with Gosling, etc. For Gosling, Cianfrance would tell him to use any means to persuade, get Williams's attention, etc. Gosling stated it was a new and interesting process, as it became a tug-of-war game on set.
The film was originally set to shoot in spring of 2008, but it was delayed due to Heath Ledger's death. The producers and director delayed the film out of respect for Michelle Williams, Ledger's ex-girlfriend and mother of his daughter Matilda, rather than going ahead and shooting the film with another actress in Williams' role.
Michelle Williams was first attracted to starring in Blue Valentine (2010) because she liked the script. Just before shooting began, director Derek Cianfrance told Williams that he was no longer interested in sticking to the script, and that he wanted Williams and co-star Ryan Gosling to improvise their scenes. This unnerved Williams, but Gosling said he did not mind improvising, as he had trouble remembering his lines.
According to director Derek Cianfrance, after shooting the first part of the love story, there were serious discussions about not doing the second part, retitling the movie simply "Valentine" and making it a depiction of falling in love.
"Dean: In my experience, the prettier a girl is, the more nuts she is, which makes you insane. You're probably nutty, coo-coo crazy. It's not your fault, you know? Just like, everybody treats you different, you know? Like, you make jokes and they're not funny, but people laugh anyway. That's gotta make you nuts. Cindy: I like how you can compliment and insult somebody at the same time, in equal measure."
"Dean: I feel like men are more romantic than women. When we get married, we marry, like, one girl, 'cause we're resistant the whole way until we meet one girl and we think, "I'd be an idiot if I didn't marry this girl. She's so great." But it seems like girls get to a place where they just kinda pick the best option or something. I know girls that get married. They're like, "Oh, he's got a good job." I mean they spend their whole life looking for Prince Charming and then they marry the guy who's got a good job and is gonna stick around."
