Amy Stewart's debut.
Dorothy actually met Twain by recognizing him on the steamship, then walking past the deckchair where he was sitting several times until Twain got up, walked to her and introduced herself.
Dorothy became a poet and writer of mystery stories, as well as a columnist in several newspapers. She did not publish her memoir about Mark Twain until 1961, the year before her death. The name of the book was Enchantment. It was retitled Mark Twain & Me.
After arriving from Europe, Twain sent a telegraph to Dorothy offering her a gift, asking whether she would rather have an elephant or ten thousand monkeys. She responded by saying that she would like to have copies of his books. He sent her a complete set, along with a little white elephant.
"Jean Clemens: Dorothy, I've tried my whole life to make my father happy, but I've never been as successful as you were this afternoon."
