Mid-Century Modern shoots in front of a live studio audience, a practice that was very common for sitcoms through the 1980s and 1990s but is now almost unheard-of.
All three actors playing the three male leads are openly gay, just like the male leads.
Richard Kind, who plays the guest role of Carroll Mintz--a character with a longstanding crush on Bunny Schneiderman (Nathan Lane)--in several episodes, also has a major theatrical role in common with Nathan Lane. Lane originated the role of Max Bialystock in the 2001 Broadway musical The Producers, and Kind later played the same role as a 2004 replacement.
