While looking for extras, a man by the name of Jonathan Stimberg was the first to apply for a role. At the time, he was on the run for killing his neighbor. He actually got a part but had to turn down as he had to head to Darwin in a hurry. To his surprise, the casting director, found out that night on the news. Ironically, Jonathan got the role of police officer!
Ivan Sen wrote and directed a sequel to Mystery Road, entitled Goldstone (2016). Aaron Pedersen reprises his role, and joining the cast is David Wenham, Alex Russell, David Gulpilil and Jacki Weaver. A spin-off mini-series also titled Mystery Road screened on the ABC in 2018.
Takeaway cowboy #2 is listed on film credits as Bruce Willis.
