The first nine minutes of the film is one continuous choreographed tracking shot, beginning with a closeup on a candle flame, to oaths of fealty, to a duel and finishing with the firing of a trebuchet on a castle.
Scotland is shown as having bare hills, much as it is now, but at the time of Robert the Bruce, those hills were fully forested.
Following a screening of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, director David Mackenzie decided to cut 20 minutes from the film. Among the scenes cut was a battle scene set against the backdrop of a waterfall, an eight minute chase sequence and an encounter between Robert the Bruce and William Wallace in the woods.
Elizabeth de Burgh is depicted as English, in reality she was of mixed Native Irish and Anglo-Norman ancestry and was born and raised in Ulster. In 1315 (eight years after Loudon Hill) Robert would lead an, ultimately unsuccessful, invasion of Ireland aimed at freeing the country from English rule. Elizabeth's father Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster led the Anglo-Norman forces against his son-in-law.
The first cut of the film was around four hours long.
"Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick: You could fight for God, or country, or family. I do not care, so long as you fight!"
"James Douglas, Lord of Douglas: Thinking about revenge? It tears on the soul, but it can also be a weapon."
