The movie is inspired by the 1938 Hollywood movie 'Angels with Dirty Faces'. James Cagney's role in the movie is the inspiration for the character of Shah Rukh Khan.
The film was in the making for over 3 years as Shah Rukh Khan had a dispute with the producer over a matter of a paycheck. The film stopped and continued several times over the 3 years.
In the middle of the song "Phek Hawa Mein Ek Chumma" (Shah Rukh standing on the rock) , Anu Malik lifted the same exact music of the intro of the song " Mangta Hai Kya" from Rangeela. Later Govinda used it for the intro of his pop song "Kad Diti Jaan". The same sound was heard in the song " One Two Cha Cha Cha" at 1:16 from the album Usha Uthup Mega Mix.
Mamik Singh blasted Rajiv Mehra in the media. He stated Mehra promised him a role in the film. The next thing he knew, Vivek Mushran was signed .
The opening drum beat of the song "Phek Hawa Mein Ek Chumma" is the same as the intro drum of "Spirit of Rangeela" from the movie Rangeela. It was later used in the song " Awaara Main Badal" in Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche. The same drum was also heard at 0:52 in the song "Hari Om Hari" by Usha Uthup from the album Usha Uthup Mega Mix. In the song " Mere Sanam" from Gupt , at 0:05, the same drum beat appears. The original source for the drum sound was taken at 45:51 fro. the CD/ program Best Service XX Large 1500 Classic Drumloops. This was a CD/ program used by music composer's for music and sounds.
