When Karan Johar started Rocky Aur Ranu Ki Prem Kahaani it was speculated that this film is shelved.But Karan Johar stated that being period film it requires at least two years to complete and will be soon go on floors.

It is Karan Johar's first period film. It will show the battle between brothers of the Mughal era, Dara Shikoh (Ranveer Singh) and Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb (Vicky Kaushal) and the many characters around them.

Film was announced in 2019 to release in 2021 but got delayed due to COVID pandemic.

Later actor Rishi Kapoor tweeted in December 2019 that Karan Johar had shown him Anil Kapoor's look in the film and it was just mind blowing.
