The film got stuck at various stages of production due to the lockdown, hence it went into development hell. However, the post production was made in near end of 2021, thus completing the remaining production task.
The origins of Shamshera was as follows. There was news earlier that Tigmanshu Dhulia was planning to make a film based on the life of notorious dacoit Sultana Daku (2015) in who used to operate in North India during the British Raj and was considered as the Indian version of Robin Hood. Many actors were eager to play this magnetic character. But it is then it was said that Tigmanshu would not make the film but Madhureeta Anand would do, and it was to be produced by Rahul Mittra and Raju Chadha. As per news, Randeep Hooda had been signed to play Sultana Daku and the film was to go on floors in April 2018. It was to be a screen adaptation of author- playwright Sujit Saraf's 2009 novel, 'The Confession of Sultana Daku'. Meanwhile, there was talk of the book being translated into a British feature with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead and Shekhar Kapur's protege Heeraz Marfatia as the director. All plans were dropped. Finally the project was made as Shamshera with Yash Raj Productions.
The film, set in the 1800s, is reportedly about a dacoit tribe, who fought for their rights as well as Independence against the British.
A four hundred foot train was created for an action sequence before the climax it was built over a period of one month.
