Rotten Tomatoes"The Black Demon" blends myth and eco-horror in its shark attack narrative, focusing on the legend of El Demonio Negro as a cautionary tale. Director Adrian Grünberg delves into the folkloric aspect, depicting the titular creature as a guardian summoned by corporate greed's interference with nature. Oilman Paul Sturges (Josh Lucas) and his family find themselves stranded on a deteriorating oil rig infested with a massive megalodon shark. However, the film's attempt to balance Paul's family dynamics and his role within the company feels contrived, resulting in inconsistent character development. The horror elements take a backseat, with infrequent glimpses of the shark and a low body count, although this approach obscures the creature's visual effects. The film suffers from a plodding pace, reliance on familiar shark encounter tropes that feel less believable given the shark's size, and an uneven sound mix. While the concept of the mythic shark adds intrigue, "The Black Demon" fails to fully explore its potential and falls short due to its underdeveloped human drama.
According to stories from fishermen around Baja California, the Black Demon legend has been told from generation to generation. It is told that thousand of fishermen have died facing this creature, due to the fact that their bodies are never found. It is also told that the Black Demon is the killer of hundreds of whales that are found dead along the Pacific Ocean, in what appears to be an attack from a huge beast. It has been seen in the Mar de Cortés too.
"Paul Sturges: I know a big-ass shark when I see one."
