Last film appearance of James Gandolfini. He died one month after shooting had wrapped.
Three dogs were used for the role of Rocco, in order to keep them a consistent size during filming.
Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace are very good friends in real life, they were trying to find a movie to do together for two years before they did The Drop. They met when they got approached by a director for another movie that neither of them ended up doing because they were trapped in other projects. They met four times to talk about that script, got to know each other and realised they had great chemistry and energy together. Rapace read the book "Animal Rescue" before the script was sent to Hardy, and texted him saying, "This could be it! This could be something for us!", Hardy read it and loved it, so they did the movie. After filming The Drop, they also co-starred in Child 44 (2015).
Saint Rocco, whose statue in the church gives Bob the inspiration for his puppy's name, is a 14th century Italian Saint and is the patron saint of dogs. Part of the legend surrounding this Saint is of a dog who brought him food while he lay sick with the plague.
Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace went to a rescue center to prepare for their roles. Hardy did adopt a dog, a female pit-bull puppy, and took it to the set.
"Bob: There are some sins that you commit that you can't come back from, you know, no matter how hard you try. You just can't. It's like the devil is waiting for your body to quit. Because he knows, he knows that he already owns your soul. And then I think maybe there's no devil. You die... and God, he says, Nah, nah you can't come in. You have to leave now. You have to leave and go away and you have to be alone. You have to be alone forever."
"Detective Torres: No one ever sees you coming, do they, Bob?"
