Zoot is the only member of the band who is still played by his original Muppet performer, Dave Goelz. The original performers behind Dr. Teeth, Floyd and Janice (Jim Henson, Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt, respectively) have all passed away and the original performer of Animal (Frank Oz) quit the Muppets to pursue his own projects. Ironically, Goelz was initially reluctant to take on the character of Zoot, and has now played him for over four decades.
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem made their debut in an early Muppet Show pilot entitled 'Sex and Violence.' When 'The Muppet Show' began in earnest, they became the "house band." They have subsequently appeared in every Muppet movie.
Lips the Trumpet Player has been with the Mayhem for years, but was seldom given much screen time or dialogue before this series.
The lineup for the band is Dr. Teeth (keyboard), Janice (guitar), Sgt. Floyd Pepper (bass), Zoot (saxophone), Lips (trumpet) and Animal (drums). Other Muppets have played with the band over the years including Clifford, Rowlf the Dog and Jim the banjo player.
All of Moog's shirts throughout the series are actual Dr. Teeth and Electric Mayhem shirts sold throughout the years.
