Given the movie's sensitive subject matter, all potentially inappropriate scenes involving a minor were actually filmed with an adult body double - as noted by a title card at the end of the film. Moreover, Isabelle Nélisse (young Jenny)'s mother was on set with her, a child psychologist was on the set, and a Screen Actors Guild representative was on set. Nelisse was never in contact with Jason Ritter (Bill) at all, and for scenes where it looked like she was lying down, she was actually standing in front of a vertical bed.
This film is based on writer and director Jennifer Fox's own, real life experience with child sexual abuse, though certain aspects of the story were changed, such as Jennifer (Laura Dern)'s confrontation with Bill at the end of the movie.
This was John Heard's final movie before his death on 21 July 2017.
Similar to in the movie, director Jennifer Fox met with the real Mrs. G several times, and the scenes in the film are based on those meetings. The real Bill would not meet with her, though he spoke with her on the phone many times over the course of several years. The script was based on the real conversations and meetings.
Director Jennifer Fox's first narrative feature film. Prior to shooting The Tale (2018), she'd only directed and made documentary films.
"Jennifer: When I was a child, I was obsessed with changing myself."
"Bill: When I say naga, you say nee! Ready? Naga! Jenny at 13: Nee!"
