The announcement for the movie came from a fashion show where Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson walked down the runway, in character, as Derek and Hansel.
Both Zoolander films feature villainous fashion designers named after minor characters from Star Trek (1966). Jacobim Mugatu was named after a gorilla-like creature that appeared in season two, episode nineteen, "A Private Little War", while Alexanya Atoz was named after the librarian from season three, episode twenty-three, "All Our Yesterdays".
Eddie Murphy had expressed interest in being in this movie. He had even developed his own pose called "Black Iron".
Alexander Skarsgård, who played Meekus in Zoolander (2001), made a cameo appearance as "Adam" in this movie.
This is the twelfth film collaboration between Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.
