AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 CPUs announced for high-end desktop computers and workstations

Highlights
  • AMD announces Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series of chips.
  • There is Threadripper 7000 Pro with up to 96 cores, 128 PCIe 5 lanes 8-channel memory.
  • Then there is the Threadripper 7000 with up to 64 cores, 48 PCIe 5 lanes 4-channel memory.

AMD has unveiled the Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series of processors for High-End Desktop computers (HEDT) and workstations. The latter gets the Threadripper Pro chips while desktop models get regular Threadripper CPUs. But even these aren’t regular by no means. They boast up to 64 cores and the Pro variants take that to an astonishing 96-core count. The top-end Threadripper Pro 7995WX model also boasts up to 128 PCIe 5 lanes, and 8-channel memory.

AMD-Ryzen-Threadripper-Processors

The Threadripper non-pro models are re-entering the market since the Threadripper 3000 series in 2019. Compared to the Pros, these chips are limited by 4 memory channels and 80 PCIe lanes (of which 48 are of PCIe 5.0 standard and the rest are of PCIe 4.0 standard).

Threadripper Pro 7000 chips support the AMD WRX90 motherboard with custom features like AMD PRO Manageability, AMD PRO Business Ready support, AMD Secure Processor, AMD Shadow Stack, AMD Memory Guard, and Overclocking support.

Meanwhile, there is also the AMD TRX50 motherboard for Threadripper non-Pro and Pro chips with overclocking support. This would be better suited for non-Pro Threadripper 7000 as it comes with only 4-Channel DRAM up to 1TB DDR5 with 5200 RPM. The storage also goes up to 48 PCIe 5.0 lanes only.
