Google introduces selfie video recovery for locked accounts: here’s how it works

Highlights

Google has given us a new tool to prove our identity if we get locked out of our accounts. Starting today, there is a new account recovery option that lets users regain access to their Google Account using a selfie video. This is an alternative or fallback option when usual recovery methods such as SMS verification, recovery email, passkeys or recovery contacts are unavailable.

How to set up your selfie video (before lockout)

Users can enable the feature from the “Security & sign-in” section of their Google Account settings, provided their account is eligible. During setup, Google asks users to record a short selfie video while performing a few guided head movements, allowing the system to capture multiple angles of their face.
