Indian smartphone market shipped 34 million smartphones in first quarter of 2024: IDC

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has released a new quarterly report on the Indian smartphone market share which showcases various trends and highlights observed in the handset space in Q1 2024. Per the report, the smartphone market grew by 11.5 percent on a year-over-year basis with 34 million smartphones being shipped in the first quarter marking consecutive growth for the third time.   • Entry-level $100 (approx Rs 8,300) – The smartphone segment below Rs 9,000 dipped from 20 percent to 15 percent in terms of market share in Q1 2024. Xiaomi contributed to this segment the highest followed by POCO and Itel.
  • Mass budget $100 to $200 (approx Rs 8,300 to Rs 16,600) – The midrange smartphone category currently holds 48 percent of the total smartphone shipments as of the Q12024. This is up from 44 percent in Q1 2023. Vivo, Xiaomi, and Samsung rule this segment with a combined share of more than 50 percent of total phones sold in the range.
  • Entry-premium $200 to $400 (approx. Rs 16,600 to Rs 33,000) – The market share of entry-premium smartphones continues to grow as it reached 23 percent towards the end of the first quarter of 2024, which is an increase of 3 percent from last year for the same duration. OPPO and Realme were the winners in the segment.
  • Mid-premium $400 to $600 (approx. Rs 33,000 to Rs 50,000) – Next up is the mid-premium category which constitutes the likes of Vivo, OnePlus, Samsung and others. This segment saw a drastic dip of 46 percent in unit terms from six percent to three percent in a year. OnePlus currently rules this category with Vivo and OPPO right behind it.
  • Premium $600 to $800 (approx. Rs 50,000 to Rs 66,000) – Coming to the premium segment, the top-selling phones in this space include the Apple iPhone 12, iPhone 13, OnePlus 12, and Samsung Galaxy S23/ S23 FE. As for the numbers, this segment accounts for just two percent of the overall market share.
  • Super-premium $800 (Rs 66,000) and above – Apple and Samsung took charge of the ultra-premium smartphone space. Per IDC’s report, this segment saw the highest growth at 44 percent and its share went from seven percent to nine percent. The top sellers for of segment in Q1 2024 were Apple’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 standard series and Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series along with Galaxy S23.

  • Vivo led the Indian smartphone in Q1 2024 with a market share of 16.2 percent up from 15.4 percent last year during the same period, overtaking Samsung which saw a decrease in its market share from 20.1 percent in Q1 2023 to 15.6 percent in Q1 2024.
  • Coming in at third is Xiaomi, which rapidly grew by 13.3 percent YoY and enjoyed a market share of 12.8 percent in Q1 2024.
  • OPPO dropped by 1.8 percent in the last quarter and now constitutes 10.2 percent of the total smartphone market share in India. On the other hand, Realme raised its market share from 9.3 percent to 9.8 percent over the past year.
  • Apple witnessed the third highest year-over-year growth among the top ten smartphone brands in Q1 2024. Its market share went from 6.8 percent to 7.3 percent in just one year.
  • Just like Apple, POCO saw an increase in its unit market share from Q1 2023. It now holds 5.9 percent of the Indian smartphone market.
  • OnePlus’ market share took a hit by 0.9 percent and the brand sits in the eighth position as of Q1 2024.
  • Motorola witnessed the most significant year-over-year growth of 110 percent. As a result, its market share jumped from 2.4 percent to 4.6 percent over one year.
  • Coming in at tenth place is Tecno which exhibited a loss of 0.5 percent and contributed 2.9 percent to the market share.
  • A significant chunk of the market share is held by other smartphone players. These are possibly brands like Infinix, Itel, Nothing, iQOO, Lava, etc.

  • For the first time in several quarters, the ASP (average selling price) of smartphones remained unchanged at USD 263 (Rs 22,000 approx.).
  • Of the 34 million smartphones shipped in 2024’s first quarter, 23 million were 5G smartphones.
  • 5G smartphone shipments in the mass budget segment of between $100 to $200 (approx Rs 8,300 to Rs 16,600) tripled to reach 46 percent share.
  • Some of the highest-shipped 5G smartphones in Q1 2024 include Redmi 13C, Vivo T2x, Samsung Galaxy A15, Vivo Y28, and Apple iPhone 14.
  • Vivo has dethroned Samsung to capture the top position in the Indian smartphone unit market share in Q1 2024. The brand consistently launched smartphones across various points and even provided great margins to its offline partners, per IDC’s report.
  • Apple had a great run during the first quarter of this year as its shipments grew by 19 percent year-on-year. The Cupertino giant offered great price discounts and attractive financing options which led to its growth even in a non-festive season.
