Microsoft releases Windows 10 Technical Preview for smartphones

Microsoft has begun rolling out the Windows 10 Technical preview for smartphones to the ones who have signed up for the Windows Insider Program. The preview has been launched for the Lumia 630 (review), Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 730 (first impressions) and Lumia 830 (first impressions).

Microsoft has stated that more devices will be added to the list in the near future. The preview is a very early version of the platform and may not come with all the functionality that you may be expecting.

The Windows 10 Technical preview will come with the feature of putting an image in the background of the home screen and interactive notifications. Cortana will come only to US users for the time being. You’ll get Office Universal apps, universal apps for Mail and Calendar, Skype with IP-based messaging and integrated messaging in the future.  

With the preview, you can also expect bugs and issues which will then be rectified post feedback from the users. Just in case you wish to install the update on your device, here’s what you need to do.

  • Back up all your data before installing the update
  • Sign up for Windows Insider Program and install the Windows Insider app
  • After logging in and registering your device, check for the updates
  • After that, you need to install the preview build on your device. You’ll have the option of choosing the ‘Insider Slow’ option if you wish to get reliable and slower updates or you can opt for ‘Insider Fast’ if you want to get the latest updates.
